Wordless Wednesday - My deck is a zoo! An Opossum!!

One of my cats was staring intently out my window this weekend, so I got up to check what he was looking at.  I thought it was either my neighbour's cat, a raccoon or squirrel.  Since it was a cold night I thought most likely a raccoon.  I turned the light on the deck and saw what I think is an Opossum!  It was really hard to take a photo of it because it was moving fast, it was dark and I was taking the photo through a window, but I got a few shots.  What do you think?  I've posted a photo of a possum from the web for comparison.

New photos - March 5!!

Photos - Feb 25!

This is his crazy tail - definitely not a raccoon or cat!

The best photo of his face I could get!
A possum photo from the web - sure looks like the  critter that was on my deck

Wordless Wednesday- This squirrel is cold & resourceful!

Ever wonder what squirrels make their nests with  No, me neither. A windy winter day knocked off the BBQ cover on our deck. I noticed rustling under the cover and wondered what it was. It was a cold and resourceful squirrel. Take a look...

Top 10 Positive Things about Snowstorms!

Snowstorms can be a pain, yes it's true.  Storms can make everyday errands and routines harder and take way longer to get to.  There are also added chores such as shoveling, salting, cleaning off your car multiple times and more.

Do you hate storms enough after reading this?  The thing is though, that there are many good things about snowstorms, especially storms that are big enough to cause snow days where school buses are cancelled and people stay home from work.

Here are my top 10 positive things about snowstorms:

1. You get to slow down and spend time with family - We're all busy and running around through our routines during the week, day in and day out.  It's hard to find time to spend time with family and just enjoy each other's company.  So when a snow day has been called, why not go out and play in the snow, play a board game, or bake together?

2. Catch up on things around the house - Do you have an unorganized front closet or foyer, a kitchen that's so unorganized that it's hard to cook efficiently?  Then why not spend the time you have snowed in, in the house organizing it or doing some cleaning you have trouble getting to on a regular day?  It will feel great to get these things done and make your everyday run way smoother, one the snow melts!

3. Catch up on hobbies you never seem to have time for - Do you have a bunch of yarn you were meaning to use to knit a scarf or a painting or book that is half complete?  A snow day is the perfect relaxing time to curl up on the sofa under a blanket and catch up on a relaxing hobby.

4. It's actually quiet and beautiful if you don't have to go out into it - If you knew the storm was coming, hopefully you stocked up on the household essentials. That's perfect!  Then when you look out your window at the snow gently falling down and the sun setting over the white mounds of snow, you might be able to find some beauty in it.  Snowy landscapes are beautiful to walk through if you're bundled up and in no rush to get anywhere in particular!

5. Warm bath or shower feels that much better - After shoveling snow, or doing winter sports, a hot bath or shower just feels much better than usual.  Also, why rush it, you're snowed in, right?

6. Excuse to cook and eat comfort foods - I don't need an excuse to eat comfort foods, but on cold, snowy days, what's more comforting than a creamy soup, chicken pot pie, apple crumble or mac and cheese?  Did I make you start wishing for more snow yet?

7. Excuse to drink cocoa, other drinks topped with whipped cream and marshmallows -Similar to #6, when you come in from the outside and your hands and feet are tingling from the cold, what's better than having a hot cocoa?  Love it!

8. You're reminded that neighbours are friendly and helpful - Our neighbours helped us dig out of the massive pile of snow at the end of our driveway that the plow left behind.  Many others have told me stories about thoughtful gestures like giving a hand to older and ill neighbours, to help them shovel the snow.  Sometimes we forget how great our neighbours are when we need a hand.

9. Most drivers are more cautious - Living in a city where everyone seems to be in a rush all day everyday and there's always traffic can be grating after a while.  That's why when there's a lot of snow on the ground that forces most people to be more cautious when they drive can be a welcome change.  I wish the snow and ice would improve everyone's driving!

10. Enjoy some outdoor sports - Sometimes when it's really cold and snowy we tend to want to hibernate inside.  It's great to at least take some time to go outside and enjoy yourself, like go for a walk, tabogan, skate or ski.  After your body has adapted to the cold of being outside the first few minutes, you can really enjoy yourself!

Let's go sleighing!

E is for Egg cup - I am Queen of the Tchotchkes

Ok, I admit it I am Queen of the tchotchkes/knick knacks/trinkets, especially in my kitchen. When we moved into our new house and it had a larger kitchen, I was so happy about it for many reasons, but one of them was that I could display more tchotchkes!

One of my favourite tchotchkes are egg cups. I collect them and use them a lot because I eat eggs frequently. I'm not a morning person, so when I'm groggy, eating an egg in the morning, eating it in a cute egg cup makes the morning a little bit more fun. It's always good to start your day with a smile!

My egg cup collection, (so far...)
